Signing in and changing your email

You can sign in to SavvyCal at savvycal.com/login with your email and password, or with Sign in with Google, Sign in with Microsoft, or Sign in with Fastmail. Your account has one Primary email address. That's the address you sign in with by password, and it's where password reset emails go.

Most sign-in trouble comes from the account being under a different email address than the one you're trying, or being created with Google or Microsoft instead of a password. The sections below cover each case.

Which email address can I sign in with?

Only your primary email works for signing in with a password. Secondary addresses you've added in your settings can't be used to sign in or to reset your password.

Signing in with a provider works like this:

  • Google signs you in to the account linked to that Google account. A Google account is linked when you sign up or sign in with it, or when you connect it as a calendar under Settings > Integrations. If it isn't linked yet, SavvyCal looks for an account whose primary email matches your Google address.
  • Microsoft only signs you in to an account that's already linked to that Microsoft account: one you signed up with, or one you've connected as a calendar under Settings > Integrations. It never matches by email address alone.
  • Fastmail signs you in to the account whose primary email matches your Fastmail address.

When you click Sign in with Google, Google asks you to choose an account. Make sure you pick the one you use with SavvyCal.

Why didn't my password reset email arrive?

Click Forgot your password? on the sign-in page, enter your email, and click Send instructions. If that address is the primary email on a SavvyCal account, we'll send an email from support@savvycal.com with the subject "SavvyCal: Reset your password."

You'll see the message "You'll receive instructions via email shortly" whether or not the address belongs to an account, so that page can't tell you if you got the address right. If nothing arrives after a few minutes:

  • Check your spam or junk folder, and search for the subject line above.
  • Try your other email addresses. Your account may be under a work address, a personal address, or an old address. Only the primary email gets the reset link, so a secondary address won't receive one.
  • Try signing in with Google, Microsoft, or Fastmail. If you created your account by signing in with a provider, you may never have set a password. Use the same provider you signed up with.

The reset link expires after 24 hours. If it's expired, request a new one. Your new password must be at least 12 characters. After you reset your password, you're signed out of SavvyCal everywhere else.

How do I set a password on an account I created with Google?

If you signed up with Google, Microsoft, or Fastmail, your account doesn't have a password you know yet. To add one:

  1. Sign in with the provider you signed up with.
  2. Go to Settings > Profile and scroll to Password.
  3. Click Email me a reset link. We'll send the link to your primary email.
  4. Open the link, enter your new password in New password and Password confirmation, and click Reset password.

From then on, you can sign in with either your password or your provider. The Password section will show Current Password and New Password fields so you can change it later.

How do I change my primary email address?

To change the address you sign in with, add the new address, confirm it, then make it primary:

  1. Go to Settings > Profile and scroll to Email Address.
  2. Click Add an email, enter the address, and click Add address.
  3. We'll send a confirmation email to that address. Click the link in it. Until you do, the address shows a Pending label. If the email didn't arrive, open the menu next to the address and click Resend confirmation. The confirmation link works for 7 days.
  4. Once the address is confirmed, open the menu next to it and click Make primary.

Your new primary email is now the one you sign in with by password and the one that receives password reset emails. Your old address stays on the list as a secondary address. To remove it, open its menu and click Delete. You can't delete your primary address.

If you just want to use a different address on event invitations, you don't need to change your primary email. See Customizing your email address on scheduling links.

If you're working in someone else's account through delegated access, the Email Address and Password sections are hidden. The account owner has to change these themselves.

Why is "Make primary" grayed out?

Make primary is unavailable in two cases:

  • The address isn't confirmed yet. Click the link in the confirmation email first.
  • Another SavvyCal account already uses this address as its primary email. Each address can be the primary on only one account. This usually means you have a second account, covered in the next section.

Why did signing in create a second account?

If you sign in with Google, Microsoft, or Fastmail and SavvyCal can't match it to an existing account (see Which email address can I sign in with?), it creates a new account for that address. This often happens when your original account is under a different email, or when you sign in with Microsoft before linking it.

You'll usually notice because you land on the setup screen for a new account. At the bottom of that screen, click Troubleshoot next to "I have an account already, why am I seeing this?" to see which email you're signed in under, then click Sign out.

There's no way to merge two accounts. To clean things up:

  1. Delete the extra account. While signed in to it, go to Settings > Profile, scroll to Danger Zone, and click Delete my account.... Only do this for the account you don't want. Deleting is permanent: it removes all of that account's data, disconnects its calendars, and cancels any subscription it owns. See Deleting your account.
  2. Sign in to your original account with its primary email and password. If you don't know the password, use Forgot your password? with that account's primary email.
  3. Link the sign-in method you want to use. Go to Settings > Integrations, click Connect another calendar, and connect the Google or Microsoft account, even if it's already listed there. After that, signing in with that provider opens your original account. To sign in by password with the other address instead, add it and make it primary as described above.

A Google or Microsoft account can be linked for sign-in to only one SavvyCal account at a time. If you connect it on your original account while the extra account still exists, signing in with it may keep opening the extra account. Delete the extra account first.

Why do I see "not associated with this authentication provider"?

The full message is: "The SavvyCal account you are trying to access is not associated with this authentication provider." It means a SavvyCal account already exists for that email address, but the Google or Microsoft account you used isn't linked to it. This most often happens with Sign in with Microsoft, because SavvyCal won't sign you in to an existing account just because the Microsoft email matches.

To fix it:

  1. Sign in another way: with your password, with Reset password if you don't know it, or with the provider you originally signed up with.
  2. Go to Settings > Integrations, click Connect another calendar, and connect that Google or Microsoft account, even if it's already listed there.

After that, you can sign in with that provider directly.

Why do I see "Forbidden" when I sign in?

A page that just says "Forbidden" means a security filter blocked the request before it reached your account. This is often caused by a VPN, a proxy, or a network with strict security settings. Try these:

  • Turn off your VPN or proxy and try again.
  • Try a different network, such as your phone's hotspot.
  • Try a different browser, or turn off browser extensions that change your traffic.

If you still see it, contact support. Let us know roughly when it happened and which network or VPN you were on.
