Reconnecting a calendar
When Google, Microsoft, Apple, or Fastmail stops accepting SavvyCal's access to your calendar account, SavvyCal marks the account as needing to be reconnected and emails you. Until you reconnect it, links that check that account's calendars for conflicts can't show any times. To fix it, go to Settings > Integrations, open the account in the Calendars section, and click Reconnect.
Why did I get an email about reconnecting my calendar?
SavvyCal sends the email when one of your calendar accounts goes from connected to disconnected. The subject names the provider, for example Action Required: Your Google account needs to be reconnected. The others say Microsoft, Apple, or Fastmail. The email shows the calendar account's email address and links to your Integrations page.
- It goes to your SavvyCal account's primary email address, which may not be the calendar account's address. See signing in and changing your email.
- You get one email each time an account disconnects. There are no follow-up reminders, so it's worth fixing right away.
- On a team link, the email goes to the person whose calendar disconnected, not to the link's owner.
Why did my calendar disconnect?
SavvyCal checks your access every time it reads your calendar, and it checks Google and Microsoft accounts at least once a day. An account disconnects when the provider rejects that access. Common reasons:
- You removed SavvyCal's access in your Google or Microsoft account settings.
- Your organization's admin changed the rules for which third-party apps can access work accounts, or suspended or deleted the account.
- Your sign-ins were reset. For example, an admin signed you out everywhere, or a password change ended access for connected apps. Whether a password change does this depends on the provider and your organization's settings.
- The Google account was deleted.
- You didn't grant every permission when you connected a Google account. SavvyCal needs both to read and to create calendar events. See calendar permissions.
- For iCloud, the app-specific password stopped working. This happens when you revoke the password in your Apple Account settings, or when you change your Apple ID password, which revokes all app-specific passwords.
Not using a calendar for a while doesn't disconnect it. SavvyCal keeps Google and Microsoft connections active in the background.
What happens to my links while it's disconnected?
SavvyCal can't see your busy times on a disconnected account, so it doesn't guess:
- Links that check its calendars for conflicts show no times. The booking page shows An error occurred while fetching availability with a Retry button. Nobody can book you through those links, so nobody can double-book you either.
- On a team link, one person's disconnected calendar stops the whole link. That includes any required attendee on a collective link and anyone on a round robin link. Optional attendees on a collective link don't count.
- You'll see which calendar needs attention. In the link editor, the Attendees section shows a message like Google Calendar needs to be reconnected. On a teammate's calendar, it names them: The Google calendar for Taylor needs to be reconnected. When you open your own booking page, the error lists the same messages.
Links that don't check any calendar on the disconnected account keep working normally.
Do new and changed events still reach my calendar?
Not while the account is disconnected. If SavvyCal needs to add, move, or cancel an event on one of that account's calendars, the change isn't made on your calendar. The booking itself is still saved in SavvyCal.
SavvyCal doesn't go back and copy those changes after you reconnect. If anything was booked, rescheduled, or canceled on that calendar while it was disconnected, check your calendar and update it by hand.
How do I reconnect my calendar?
- Go to Settings > Integrations and find the Calendars section.
- A disconnected account has a red alert icon on its logo (This app needs to be reconnected.). It opens automatically so you can see its calendars.
- Click Reconnect at the bottom of the account, where Sync usually is.
- Finish reconnecting for your provider:
- Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, or Fastmail: sign in to the same account you connected before and approve the access SavvyCal asks for. For Google, make sure both permission boxes are checked.
- iCloud Calendar: in the Reconnect iCloud Calendar dialog, paste a new app-specific password and click Reconnect. Your regular Apple ID password won't work. See connecting your iCloud calendar to create one.
Reconnecting updates the existing account, so the calendars you check for conflicts and the calendar your links create events on stay the same.
Sign in with the same account that disconnected. Signing in with a different Google or Microsoft account adds it as a new connection, and the old one stays disconnected.
What if my company's IT has to approve SavvyCal?
Some Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 organizations only let employees connect apps their admin has approved. If yours does, the provider's sign-in screen may stop you from approving SavvyCal, or you'll land back in SavvyCal with An error occurred connecting this account. Please try again.
Ask your admin to allow SavvyCal for your account, then click Reconnect again. They can see exactly which permissions SavvyCal requests on calendar permissions.
I reconnected. Why does it still show an error?
- We don't have sufficient permissions for this account. You didn't grant everything SavvyCal asks for. Click Reconnect in that notice and approve all the permissions. For Google, check both boxes. Check for this notice even if you saw a message that the account connected successfully.
- There are now two accounts. You signed in with a different account. Reconnect the old one with the right account, or remove the one you don't need.
- We're having trouble using these credentials. For iCloud, this usually means you used your Apple ID password. Create a new app-specific password and try again.
- An error occurred connecting this account. Please try again. The sign-in was canceled or blocked. If your organization restricts apps, your admin may need to approve SavvyCal.
- The booking page still shows no times. Click Retry or reload the page. If it's a team link, check the message for a teammate's name: To resolve, please ask Taylor to reconnect their account. Only they can reconnect their own calendar.
How do I remove a calendar account?
- Go to Settings > Integrations and open the account in the Calendars section.
- Click the trash icon (Disconnect).
- Type
DELETEand click I'm sure, delete this account.
When you remove an account:
- Its calendars are no longer checked for conflicts. See how SavvyCal decides when you're busy.
- Rescheduling and canceling events already booked on its calendars no longer updates those calendars.
- Links that created events on one of its calendars no longer have a calendar. New bookings on them aren't added to any calendar, and SavvyCal emails the invites instead. If one of those links used Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, its location is cleared. Pick a new calendar under Create events on..., and check the location on those links.
- SavvyCal still appears in your Google or Microsoft account's list of connected apps. To revoke access there too, see calendar permissions.
Removing a calendar account doesn't change how you sign in to SavvyCal.
